    Being new to participating in the challenges, I"m not certain of the protocol on commenting. I left comments on most of the images I voted for, but not on others.

    Should comments be limited to positive feedback, or is negative feedback if done constructively encouraged too? Likes and dislikes are such a personal and subjective thing, I hesitate to give an opinion if it isn't completely positive.

    I welcome constructive criticism on any of my images--especially if you give me a hint of how to 'fix' the problem. Just telling me that you hate it doesn't help me, but if you tell me that the image could have been improved by doing (fill in the blank) then I know something to try to make it better or improve my skills. It also helps to know what I did 'right' so at least I won't feel like a total failure. :D

    Actually Bryce, you were a big help to me this time. You gave me the steps to creating my own "scratchy" layer in ps. I still need to keep working at perfecting my scratches, but you got me on the right road and I appreciate that so much.

    Most of the time the gallery comments are positive, neutral or suggestions. I would consider the suggestions as mild constructive criticism. Here's a couple links to somewhat recent discussions on commenting here in this forum:

    I have a personal goal of commenting on all the photos in the round subsequent to me placing in the top 5. I feel like it's important to comment on all the photos because what we each consider the weaker photos may be the ones that really need the help a comment can provide. If a shot gets no comments, there is nothing to learn.

    It is definitely more challenging to comment on what we each consider the weaker shots, but I remember someone mentioning that the person who took it obviously saw something in the shot to enter it, so I look for their vision (sometimes I just wonder what I am missing). I try to comment on what I like about the image first, even if it's just the idea, and if there is something that appears obviously flawed to me, I may suggest that aspect could be improved ("I would like to see ...").     Regarding commenting on images I think it has to be better to comment than not at all, and as photographers we all learn far more from each other than from books I reckon. But we must also understand that photography is an art form, and criticism can be very subjective beyond obvious technical flaws. I once had a comment that made so many wrong assumptions about my image that it took me a while to stop fuming inside, despite my inner voice saying "it is only one person's opinion, get over it" :)

    So we all need to recognise our own subjectivity, pet likes and dislikes, and if we are only giving an opinion we need to be careful that it doesn't come over as something more concrete. This has been a very difficult challenge to judge, because who is to say what constitutes the look of a 100 yr old photograph?

    Sadly I rarely have time to comment, and feel genuinely guilty about that, especially when others are so generous with their feedback.

    15524779-Ti.gif There is a lot of variety in the appearance of 100 year old photographs. I have (on loan) a collection of photographs taken in Chicago between 1890 and 1920, and I took a careful look at the ones taken around 1910 and 1912 when processing my entry for this challenge. But when things were calmer, I sometimes focused on entries with no comments - especially if I had already commented on other entries in the threads. If we all try to comment - as our lives and schedules allow - and spread around the comments a bit, I think it will balance out. And hopefully, newcomers will feel encouraged to continue participating in this great forum.

    Joyce, I appreciate all that you are doing to give us fun challenges. Thank you! I look forward to participating more if and when life settles back down again.

    Tatiana, that photo ROCKS....
    What a fantastic round, so many wonderful shots!

    I can't tell you HOW many times I have shot the Statue of Liberty. I mean, EVERY time I go home now, when we get on the boat, I shoot her, and that only adds to the hundreds of times I'd done it while living on Staten Island. I could see her from my classroom window in high school; she and the towers were always just 'there'...

    (Yikes, a MOVIE spoof??? ) this is SO out of my field. Movies are my Hubby's thing.

    Wow, wow, wow…. I'm in shock - thank you so, so much - wow!

    Congratulations to Trish, PedalGirl, Linda and John, and also congratulations for the other beautiful entries I really liked and voted for.

    This is amazing - I took so many photos of Ottawa in the past, I thought there was nothing else left to photograph… :)

    Thinking "old", and processing in the old style brought a so new way of showing things in photography to me.

    I like old photos for the nostalgia they bring, but never thought to make one looking that way - while processing different shots I took for this challenge, I was literally surprised to see how they pop out of my screen in a new perspective and light - incredible!

    Congrats Tatiana! It was a great entry - got my vote! Congratulations to the other winners also!

    I had to laugh at my one vote - thanks to whoever gave me that. I was having surgery so had to throw something together hoping to re-do afterwards, but I wasn't able to get to it. I'm still recovering so it is going to be hard to get the Mega done, but I am determined.
