Externally searching SmugMug

Hi there! I'm doing a custom deep integration of SmugMug and WordPress and is looking for a way to search a users SmugMug account from within the external site. Although I'm using WP this would apply much wider and input or advice from anyone who has done something similar would be much appreciated!
As of now, I see a few approaches:
1) Have a script post a search-term to to the SmugMug engine and "rake" the results to display externally. Not very elegant, but would be fast and benefit from the SmugMug engine finesse. I'm very interested in hearing from people who have gone down this road.
2) Using the API to (at regular intervals) build an external library, searching this instead of the actual live data at SmugMug.
3) Encouraging SmugMug to implement search support in the API... This would be the holy grail, and probably not to hard from them to do. It would set SM even further apart from competitors and make it's product applicable in even more situations... Pretty please? :wink
