i want something low cost that will cover most all aspects except heavy zooming. sooo what do you guys think of the

The one lens that was a favorite of many for the 10D when it appeared was the 28-135 IS. I loved that lens on my 10D.

I haven't used one but many report the Tamron 28-75 to be as sharp as the Canon 24-70, but at a fraction of the cost. Last one at fm went for $280.

With the 10D and grip, you're already a handful. That said, the Canon 28-70 L series is one big piece of glass. I carry that and the combination is really a big camera. Doesn't even fit into Lowepro's MiniMagAW (a rather large single-camera bag).

I guess it could be worse. You could have a 1DS (grin)

I agree with Olga, the Canon 28-135IS lens is a great walk-around-lens. With the 1.6 factor taken into account, this lens gives you the 35mm equivalent of a 45-216 zoom range which is pretty versatile. The IS is the icing on the cake. There's nothing wrong with the 28-105 (I've owned one) but I'd take a step up and go with the 28-135IS - there are lots of used ones out there if you check around
