Ive had this lens in the past but it was a used model and eventually the USM burnt out. Since then, I learned to live with the super cheap 1.8. Have a heavy wedding season this year and wanted to start off with a fresh one and it arrived. Here are a couple test shots I took of my 6 month old son.

Overall, well worth the extra 300 bucks. The USM is so much smoother than on the 1.8.

It's a great lens. If I don't have room for my 24-70 f/2.8 or I'm shooting street, it's my go to lens these days. Really strong piece of kit.

Love the 2nd one. Tough to precisely focus on a squirming baby at 1.4.

This must be on a full frame sensor. I can't get that shallow DOF with the 7d.

Even with a 1.4 lens? Maybe a little greater DOF with a 7D, but I'd have to think it would still go pretty shallow with a 1.4 lens.

Love all of the facial shots...just don't like the dirt circle around the top of his head...sorry, but it was the first thing that I noticed and wondered what the heck it was...then, of course...I realized it was his hair.

I'd clone in some carpet to reduce it. Wonderful facial images, but this is a real distractor....at least for me.
