Passwords for categories

Hello everyone,

I really would like to see the option to password-protect entire categories. We already have the function to password-protect galleries and the whole site, but not the categories. I'm upload about 600 galleries right now, switching from another website, but only 10% should be available to the public. It would be just too much of a hassle to set a password for the 540 private galleries.

Instead it would be very helpful to password protect all the private categories (which include the about 540 galleries) and let the remaining public category open for the public and the search engines.

Regards,
Carst

    Hi Carst,

If you don't want a gallery to be public, you don't necessarily need to password protect it. You could also set the gallery to unlisted and then it wouldn't show on your homepage for visitors. You can find more information on passwords and unlisting galleries here.

If you want to share a number of unlisted galleries with a person, you could make use of our sharegroup feature. It allows you to combine multiple unlisted galleries into one handy link and you can password protect sharegroups as well.

Gallery settings don't have to be set for each individual gallery. You can make use of quick settings which allow you to save a set of settings. On the 'create new gallery' screen you could then choose from any of your quick settings to apply one to the new gallery you create. A quick setting can for example also include a password. Look at the "Make a quick setting now to save time later." section on the quick settings help page for more information.

In regards a category password feature, you could add your suggestion to the SmugMug feedback page.

Thanks Sebastian for you answer. I already mailed support before I saw your answer today. Now i have three votes to the category-password-idea on the feedback-page.

Hope the guys at smugmug look into this feature soon.

    Thanks, regards,
    Carsten
