Asking for a friend...

What's this lens like? Awful? Not bad if you don't need fast aps? Input welcomed....

For casual snapshots it is acceptable. For enlargements it requires small apertures, so lots of light. It's not a lens that I would find usable in too many situations.

I would rather recommend a 2 - lens budget solution:
    1) Tamron SP AF 17-50mm, f2.8 XR Di II LD IF for a splendid standard zoom, that I know you also use/used.
    2) Tamron 70-300mm, f4-5.6 Di VC USD for an OK tele-zoom from 70-200mm (especially on an APS-C body), which improves nicely a stop down in aperture and in good light. No, the 300mm is not very good, but it's still at f5 at 200mm.

I like the Tamron lenses for Canon because of a very nice 6 - year warranty, and because body compatibility is generally better than Sigma, whom I also use.
