I wonder if it is a good option to buy this converter...:):
I have the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens which would give me 224mm with the 20D :rofl
It is expensive; rather time consuming to mount, etc..
Quality ?
Any comments, samples, please ? ...
Buing this extender would (would it ?) spare me to get the expensive and good 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM IS...
As a matter of fact I never liked extenders too much ... And zooms neither. But, as time goes by, the quality of the glasses, the technique increses ...
Thank you.:D

Take a look at this page where most, if not all, of your questions should be answered. Most importantly, I don't see your lens listed on the compatiblity chart so it none of this may matter.

It would not spare you the expense, as you'd end up with a 48-140/5.6 lens, rather than a 70-200/2.8. And no image stabilizer. Two-stops less light.

And the converters don't work with the 24-70 anyway.

The Canon 2x is only officially supported for Canon's prime lenses, 135mm and longer. It may work for the 70-200, but not very well, and not rec'd for the 100-400, altho both zooms do work with the 1.4 TC.

It is officially supported on the 70-200 and the 100-400. How well they work is open to much debate and speculation. I like a 1.4 on my 70-200/2.8, quite happy. Have not tried a 2X.

Hmmm... i see I mis-read Pathfinder's post. :( My bad. Yes, both zooms do indeed work with the 1.4X. And I do believe the 70-200/2.8 will also work with the 2X but I have not tried it.

I must confess that the point you made about the loss of light is a good one and you are absolutely right.
I'm not going to buy the converter. Oh no.
The lens will have to way on the shop for a while.
I give too much importance to lenses wide open.:D

I think the 2x will 'work' with the 70-200 f2.8 L, but I suspect it will suffer with significant flare due to all the optical surfaces.

I tend to think the 70-200 gets "flairy" with the 1.4 TC also. Compare the 70-200+1.4 TC with a good 300mm prime as the standard and the combo will suffer, I suspect.

The 2x is much better with good primes. I like it there:):

Zooms are compromises to begin with, as are TCs. Adding one compromise to another usually does not lead to optical improvement, does it?? The only improvement is not optical, it is financial. ne_nau.gif
