Quick help please. Will this lens work on Nikon D5100?

I need to get back to this guy ASAP so any quick answers would be appreciated. Question about Tamron AF 28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC. I sold a this lens to a person on ebay and he claims it doesn't work on his camera. He has a Nikon D5100. (I was using it on a D700 and it worked fine.)

1. He says it won't autofocus and says he verified the AF switch on the side of lens was on.

2. He also says he hears the VR servos constantly, not just when you press the shutter button halfway down like you normally do.

This lens has the focus motor in the lens itself so it 'should' work on the D5100, right?

Any ideas?

Here's the lens:

Tamron compatibility chart says "D Compatibility" for both the D700 (my camera) and the D5000 (which should be nearly the same as what he has):

I can't see why it wouldn't work with that body. If it were me, I'd contact Tamron - if anyone can give you a definitive answer, I'd think it would be them.

Only other thing that occurs to me: if it was sold on eBay, I'm assuming it was shipped to the guy? Was it shipped with adequate packing materials* to cushion it? Might it have been damaged in transit? (If it is damaged, the guy should have inspected the package for visible damage before he accepted / opened it. It's also conceivable he may have done some damage himself. Who knows.)

    * The reason I ask about the packaging: last time I shipped my camera to Nikon, the FedEx truck was right at the store doing pickups as I left. Some instinct made me hang around and watch, and I literally saw the FedEx guy throwing the boxes into the back of the truck. Not gently tossing them, but actually throwing them from the pavement as far into the truck as he could. Thank god for bubble wrap and styrofoam.

    .

I'm calling Tamron tech support as soon as they open today.

I shipped it in the original box/packaging and of course that was inside another box with padding around it. I asked him if the package seemed to be roughed up. Waiting for his answer....but I think he would have mentioned that already.

I saw a footnote in their chart. #3....says no AF motor in body (I knew that)...'requires motor to function'. Well that's a big bummer if that's true. I'll have to call Tamron to confirm but it looks like the notes says it does need the motor

It's my understanding that the "VC" version of this lens is only available with "BIM" (Built-In-Motor). If that is true then the lens should be AF-S and should work with any Nikon body.

Best to wait to see what Tamron says.

their chart was confusing but they did confirm it should work on that body. The buyer still claims he can't get it to work, though his 18-55 kit lens works (autofocus). I'm not sure what he could be doing or if there's some sort of firmware incompatibility in play here. Who knows. I'll just take it back and resell it to a dealer so I don't have to fool with this sort of mess again.
