Flowing River

I had some time after work today, so I decided to see if I could learn how to use the filters I just received. I used the river that flows through Loveland for the subject.

I used a Super Takumar 28mm F3.5 lens at F11 for the first image and a SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8 lens for the second. Both were set to F11 and both used a Cokin P filter holder and a Hitech 2.7 ND filter as well as a 3 stop hard graduated filter.

I only spent a few minutes taking the shots, but I can already see where I'll be using this setup in many landscapes.

It looks like a great spot. I've never used a graduated filter, so I can't speak to how you used it, but this looks like an image that screams out for multiple exposures blended with some layer masks. The rocks are still a bit too bright and the forest a bit too dark for my taste. I do like how the water is glowing with a magical blue-green.

Really interesting shots, CJ. I agree with David that this probably wasn't the best spot to try out your grad filter seeing how the highlights aren't arranged in neat horizontal layers. However that smooth green water looks extremely cool. nod.gif

Interesting shots but the rocks in the background are maybe too distracting to my taste. Some PP would fix that as David suggested.

    Excellent first try!!

While the image could benefit from some post processing, the initial capture is very nice.

I wouldn't want to open the shadows too much though. The contrast really leads the eye to follow the river and the over all feel is late in the day moody.

Thanks everyone! I took your suggestions and post processed the first photo a little more. I done some selective exposure on the bright area and burned the edges/bright parts a little.

Here is the new post processed image. I do like this one better than the original.
