    I think the color one works better, the people seem to get lost with the competition of the brightness on the right in the B & W.

    First shot is compositionally better than the second... I expect that I would like the first in b/w instead of color.

    Like the shaggy heads to match the shaggy dogs!

    I like the people in b/w , but would go further in the processing. First to consider is changing the aspect ratio to cut some of the right side. Second, if you have sliders on your processing program, darken the lights/highlights. If you have color sliders (like in LR), then try darkening the green sliders. That might bring the brightness of the right side, central areas and her shoulder to a better viewing level.
