I am currently on trial mode and i am very close to signing up for a pro account. The map it feature is a big selling point for me since i will be using smugmug primarily as a travel album for myself and my girlfriend. The only problem is I am unhappy with the mapquest map. From some googling i understand that smugmug originally had google maps but i guess this has changed recently, is this correct? If there is any way that i can change the map it feature back to googlemaps, please let me know.. this would make me sign up with smugmug with a quickness! :ivar

As far as I know you will need to use the service that SmugMug has chosen, and based on comments here over the past few weeks it appears that they have chosen to move away from Google maps.

I didn't find an announcement of this, but Andy confirmed it here.

I used to link as many of my pics as I could to Google Maps, I found it a wonderful feature. But the last few weeks whenever I've tried I only get a road map, which is useless for most of my pics so I haven't bothered to link them. I've been meaning to ask what the problem is, but obviously Smug have found something better, even though 2 months later it doesn't seem to be up and running yet :(

Sure it's up an running. Try the view changer upper right on your map.

I'm sorry Andy but it doesn't seem to be working, try zooming in closer and we're told that "the data isn't currently available". So you only get a very general geographical location. Previously I could zoom in as close as I liked and locate the images very accurately :(

I've already answered this in other threads :) We had to change map providers, I'm very sorry. John, it does "Work" -- I'm sorry you can't zoom in as close as before.

OK, technically you're correct in that it does work, but not anything like as well as it used to, so it is a backward step that's all. People used to be able to see where photos were taken to within a few metres, which side of a street for instance. Now they get a very poor resolution aerial photo with only a very vague idea of where the shot was taken.

I wish The Google would have made it so we didn't have to change. Sorry John.

That's unfortunate that googlemaps is no longer being used. Googlemaps is so much better than mapquest. I went to check out "leaflet's" (the java script for the new map feature) website and saw that the example they had was using a different map. Im not a coder or anything, but would it be possible to tweak the java script so that it will source from a different map provider other than mapquest? Maybe yahoo maps or bing? Maybe provide a couple different map options? Mapquest is just horribly outdated and shouldn't even be around anymore. :nah

I agree, the new mapping/aerial photos are very poor. I don't want it to appear that all my posts are moans these days, but there must be some alternative to Google Maps? Can I ask what the issue with Google was? No worries if this is confidential.
