Deleted photo can still be accessed by URL !

I've had to delete a photo from one of my public galleries because the URL for the 'Large' photo page is being linked from a forum that I don't wish to be associated with.....

The Gallery has External Links, Easy Sharing and Originals turned off and Protected is turned on.

I know I can't stop people linking to a URL but I was a little surprised to find this URL being used :

marklamble.smugmug.com/gallery/.....././......../Original

Now this isn't the end of the world as I don't upload 'real' originals as I don't allow printing from my site (no point as I'm in the UK) and digital downloads aren't an option at the moment - I was just surprised to see the /Original link - still haven't figured out how the person who posted to the forum found the photo in the first place and how they came to use the 'Original' link...

As they're not responding to my requests to remove the post and associated link I've had no choice but to remove the photo from the gallery - unfortunately the URL in the forum post still works even after I've removed the photo !

Is there a scheduled 'purge' job that I need to wait for or is this 'just the way it works' ?

Mark

    Hello Mark,

The photo was indeed deleted, but the image was being served up from your browser's cache most likely.

Are you saying that even with Originals turned off, they were able to access the original copy of the picture?

    Hi Dodge,

The reason is that some forums can cache the image locally, as can pc browswers...

You misunderstood my question. If Originals are turned off, they never should've gotten that picture in the first place. Thats definately NOT what the original poster meant right? He said the poster is using the "Original" link, but also says its linking to the "large" photo page?

    Very confusing post.

He had originals ON and Ext Linking Allowed - that's how it started. Since then, he turned origs off.

    Hope this helps,

    A little more explanation

To help explain for others. I've noticed that you if someone uses the original link in a gallery that doesn't allow viewing of originals, the requester will just get the large image.

For example, this URL http://jfriend.smugmug.com/gallery/879690/1/39913315/Original, will just show you the large version of the image because originals are not allowed in this gallery. This can happen in real-life either because originals were previously allowed when someone grabbed a link to the original and they are no longer allowed or if someone just manipulates the URL to replace "Large" with "Original".
