I have some pentax screw mount super-multi-coated takumar lenses with infrared focussing marks on them.

i assume that infrared focussing distances should be the same on my 20d as a film camera and that these will be accurate?

I would assume so, a film plane is a film plane whether it is chemical or electronic. But nothing says yes more confidently than running your own test :-)
