Yeah, tony--I like it a lot. The large amount of empty space and the distance and asymmetry in size between the person and the sign oddly add to his isolation. I think this is one of those cases where the empty space adds to the overall sense of the photo. And of course his posture, head tilt, and facial expression--though somewhat hard to see--all work really well together. Very nicely done!
I like the image and the composition, but is the sign necessary?
Necessary? I dunno. The figure didn't seem enough to me
to make the image. The diagonal balance of the two things
seemed to add to the image in my view. The sign and the
wall place the individual.
What struck me when I saw the scene was how small and
compact the man was in comparison to his surroundings.
So, I included the surroundings. Just the walls and windows
weren't enough. The sign, in my opinion, adds scale.

The sign is not necessary,it does not appear to give it any context, and if you cropped the top I think it would give more attention to the subject, and make it a much stronger image.
I think you can get two very different images: one with the sign and one without. Although I like the sign because it gives a commercial and thus a public space feeling to the image, I can also imagine that a vertical crop that takes advantage of the vertical elements--door frame and the wallboards--might also work very nicely. In the latter, we might get a slightly closer view of his face, and the verticality of such a crop and background might also serve to highlight his compactness.

Unless you think there's a chance that the man is hungry, down on his luck... to me the sign adds context to the story I'm telling myself. I also agree that it adds balance and scale to the comp. Without it, he's just a man squatting on the sidewalk.
