Very nice, Jim! I love the P-40/Zero formation shots you have in your gallery!

Nice series. I have an airshow coming up in a few weeks so I checked out your Exif data. I see you shot at what I would think were pretty small apertures F11 - F14 or around there. Why? Were you concerned about DOF? Maybe they are not small to you but I'm a sports guy who is used to shooting wide open. Hoping to learn something here.

Not to answer for Jim C, but here's the deal on the small apertures Jim S - to get an acceptable level of prop blur (so they don't look like model airplanes hanging from the ceiling) you need a slow shutter speed, and unless you are using an ND filter, you will end up with a small aperture. Shooting jets, or static prop aircraft, I'll use Aperture Priority, and dial in somewhere around f/7.1 but for prop blur, I'm in Shutter Priority, and something 1/250 or slower, giving the small apertures.

OK, got the prop blurr part, but why not drop the ISO from 200 to 100 to slow things down. Not much of a quality issue on the 7D between the two but lower is allways better, right? I thought this was going to go more down the road of some DOF or focus accuracy trick vs shutter speed.

Jim, I usually do shoot at ISO 100 (I have a 40D) but on a bright sunny day, even at ISO 100, a shutter speed of 1/125 or slower will give you a small aperture.

Well the weather was a mix of sun and also a lot of clouds as the planes were coming from the south it was cloudy and sometimes dark as they got in front of us then we had an open spot with at times blue sky and bright sun. No tricks in this it is just what I chose in the varying conditions

Super shots James. I wanted to be there for the Zero's maiden show but family was visiting. I made the 2.5 hour drive several times last summer for the FHC & HFM events.
