You use to be able to drill down to the different type pages in help. Now all you get is a Google type
search that never seems to contain the basic info you're looking for. I just wasted twenty minutes
trying to find the homepage popular box to reference "Adjust: # of photos" for someone.
All I found was this and no where describing where you choose.
Most Popular Photos - you choose how many
I find this new type help totally useless almost every time I use it.

You can still browse the help section. Below each heading, you find the a few often asked articles to click on directly. If you'd like to see all articles in a section, just click on the 'view all XX articles':

In regards to your question, I don't think there's currently an article describing the "adjust # of photos" option. As with most homepage boxes that have options, they can be usually found at the top of the homepage box.
SmugMug Support Hero
It's been a while since I spent any appreciable time in the Help section, and it has changed radically since I set up my site. I tweaked a lot of things, but if I were starting now I'd have a harder time doing it. I think the issue arises because the new layout (and it looks as though the content has been changed / slimmed down, also) seems to emphasize contacting the Support Heroes instead of doing it yourself. For anyone who likes to DIY, that's incredibly frustrating.
Now of course, part of this is just the fact that we were comfortable with the old layout, we knew where / how to find things, and *grumble grumble* now it's different. On the one hand, I completely applaud the fact that Smuggy has revamped the Help; there was a lot of really old stuff in there, and sometimes multiple articles on how to do something, and I'm willing to bet my next check that perhaps some of the old stuff doesn't work with the newer features / templates / styles. So it's good to clean house, so to speak. And yes, it does look prettier. But on the other hand - don't take away so much DIY stuff and leave us out in the cold, forcing us to either spend hours finding what used to be right there, or rely on the Heroes. Wonderful as they are, some of us are stubborn and prefer to get under the hood ourselves.
I hope the old Help still exists somewhere in an archive.
