Lens Cases - Lowepro vs Thinktank

I had posted awhile back asking about the difference between Lowepro vs Thinktank bags and now I have a Top Loader/Holster of each brand. The padding is significantly different in each. At least I feel it is. But now I need lens cases and I've seen Lowepro's in the store, but have never seen Thinktanks. If anyone has a Thinktank lens case .. what do you think of them. If you have both brands ... what are the pros and cons of each?

Finally did some searching on my own and found this and this. I had also found another site where they had photo comparisons, but I can't find it again. While the links are talking harness systems they do talk about the cases that attach to them.

LP and TT offer lens cases for different reasons. TT's is for packing down while traveling and then using them when setting up at your destination. That accounts for the reasoning behind less padding. Also too less weight. Good concept, but not what I'm looking at doing. LP's aren't made to be squished down and packed. The cases I have of each brand the padding is a whole lot less in the TT's. I had originally bought my TT's holster and then returned it because the thinness of the padding scared me after using LP products. But I gave in and bought it again I really wanted the ability to have my camera hood in position ready to shoot.

I need to be much more careful when setting down the TT Holster when out shooting vs the LP's Toploader. Also too I gave up carrying room for extra things. LP's pockets are much roomer while TT's are tight. With the LP's Toploader I can put my 50mm or 10-22 lens in the front pocket without needing a lens pouch

I don't like that the TT's are closed with a drawstring. To me that means it's still open to the elements. My luck would be I'd set down my Holster with lens pouch attached and some darn stick will poke through the opening you have with the closed drawstring. There was mention of dust getting to the lens when in a TT's lens pouch.

Darn it .. the TT's holster serves me well, but doesn't either. Another thing I've found out too ... when I'm out shooting I tend to try to keep the TT clean while with the LP I don't worry about it because it cleans up so nicely. I'm gonna have to really think this one out. I was hoping others on dgrin who are using these types of gear would of chimed in with their assessment, but I don't think they're going to

Hmmmm .... after rereading what I just wrote ... I see I'm getting one option I really want with the TT, but giving up a whole lot more not using the LP.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts

Hi - I hope dGrin don't mind me popping in - I work for thinkTank.

So there are two types of our modular bags (sorry if you know this already) the Skin and the Modular... The Skin has less padding for packing flat, the modular is more padded - something else, with the new versions released recently, the rain covers that come with every modular piece are in a zipped pocket in the base of the modular / skin components - so added padding for when / if you put them straight down onto the ground.

I did see there were two lens pouches My dream lens pouch would be the modular with the cover like the skin has. Do you ever see a product like that being produced? I understand how these 2 pouches work and the reasoning behind making them as they are. For me who's out in fields and on dusty gravel roads I really have a concern using the Modular with just a drawstring closure.

Sew a cover like the Skin onto the Modular and I'll buy it in a heartbeat D In fact I'll buy a couple

Hey Mary! Ahh, I get you... I shall take your feedback and pass it onto Lily and Mike who designed the modulars... I shall also take a sewing machine, a skin 50 and a modular pouch and make a frankensteins baby! ha... I've shot many festivals with the modulars, and whilst I've never had any issues, I totally understand where you're coming from - the other option would be to simply pop the elasticated seam sealed waterproof (mouthful!) cover over the thing when you're not using it - it is tethered to the modular pouch, so if you just whip it off, you're not going to lose / drop it.... I'll take a photo and post it so you can see. --S

Yeah I'd like to see a photo of what your describing, but I do understand what you said .. even if it was a mouthful As for Lily and Mike .. get them working on a lens pouch for us photographers that are out in the dirty elements

As for your 'frankenstein baby' ... it would work and be wonderful rofl
