Today was the first time I'd heard of this. There's a varient of it called ptp/ip that runs over tcp/ip. Any way to use this for uploading to SM in the future?

Yes, I think this has been used for years in cameras to transfer photos from camera to computer via USB, but I've never seen any service or program that makes use of that IP implementation. Are there any reports of this ever taking off across all camera manufactures or whether the companies listed on the wikipedia page actually still implement it nowadays in their cameras?
From the looks of the wikipedia article as it is, it just seems to be yet another standard that never translated into the mass market / wide spread use.

And a quick Google search look promising either. One of results on the first page is a dpreview news post from 2004 announcing this tech.

Yeah, I haven't seen this on spec sheets for modern cameras, so it might be a standard that was never adopted. Bummer because it had a lot of potential for a card to SM bridge without a computer for uploading.

I'm sure you're aware of EyeFi. They allow you to essentially skip your computer and upload directly to web sites (including SmugMug).
