270 EXII as fill flash on 5d?

I'm considering dragging my 5D up high for 5 days of backpacking, instead of my rebel which I usually take.

I'm looking at the small form factor flashes for use as fill light for people shots. Anyone have experience with the 270 EX II? The 300 and 400 series flashes are getting into too much extra weight- at that point I'd probably prefer to just bracket my shots and try to blend the exposures, even without a tripod.

The two lenses I'll take are probably a 28mm and 70-200mm Anyone know how big the lens shadow would be at 70mm? It claims to zoom to 50mm, so I figure the shadow can't be that big?

Sorry, I don't have that flash and I was unable to find a related thread on our site.

If you have the original Canon 5D I'm not sure about compatibility with the Canon 270EX II flash. It is my understanding that the 270EX II flash only works properly with camera body hosts capable of acting as the controller for the flash, because that flash has no user menu on the flash itself.

    From the Canon Specifications page:

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/speedlite_flash_lineup/speedlite_270ex_ii#Specifications

"Compatible with model EOS 5D Mark II and later. Available via firmware update for: EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS 40D, EOS 50D, and EOS Rebel XS."

So, if you have the original Canon 5D body, I suggest that the smallest/lightest compatible Canon flash is the original 270EX.

Thanks Ziggy. I have the m II. I think I'll give it a try, see if it's worth it. I've wanted a fill flash for people's faces outdoors a lot, it might be a good piece of equipment to have.
