I've used an old Vivitar lens and it's really not that bad. But, you need a
lot of light for it to work well.

I'm not sure I'd buy another one though. Mostly because there's no control
over it (well, not much anyway).

    I have a 20 year old Quantaray 500mm f/8 mirror
Works ok with the 20d (use a tripod) but the bokeh is awful
I don't use it much but it has it's place

    check that it will fit.
check that it will fit-the canon logo in front of the on board flash on a 20d sticks out so far that it prevents the attachment of many mirror lenses

mirror lenses arent so bad-downside is fixed aperture and donut shaped reflections/flare-some people dont mind these others hate them.

if however its a sunny day and the sun is behind you then 1000mm will get you some shots that you won't get any other way, other than with a 1000mm prime ,therefore unless you are as rich as Croseus then the mirror lens is the way to go.

a 1000mm lens however will require you to use mirror lock up and a remote on a very sturdy tripod ,to avoid camera shake.

the question you need to ask yourself is what kind of subject you will be shooting and where and then whether your new lens will be used.

I'd ratherr go the 400mm or 500mm prime lens with a 2x (1.4x) teleconverter...before I'd settle for a fixed ap,mirrored lens. These mirrored lenses are not the best for photography. They are better suited for spotting scope / binoculars ..hehehee. I've heard a pair of the Nikkor 500mm mirror lens make a pretty nice pair of binocs. Might look for a quality used 400/500mm prime and a teleconverter. Remember the converter will cut your light gathering ability (speed/aperture) I will also usually degrade image quality a bit...(especially compared to prime of equal focal length) The prime lens and teleconverter also give you more versatility (400mm or 800mm /500mm or 1000mm) You can also use a 1.4./1.6x converter. I just do not like mirror lenses. I would look for a fast 400mm and a well matched teleconverter. If you really need that extra reach...then go with a 500mm prime. The price may seem good for those inexpensive mirror lenses......but as the saying goes "you (sometimes) get what you pay for". I'd especially avoid any zooms in that focal length. Ewwww. Talk about fuzzy pics waiting to happen.

The bokeh alone is enough to stop me owning one...looks like an acid trip from the 60's.
