There are a lot of people asking the same questions I did a week ago, so I figured I would follow up with initial impressions after playing with it for a week or so.

First off, the details:
camera:
Canon 350D (Rebel XT)
Lens:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di

So far it has been a really fun lens. I picked up a few books and have been picking Baldy's brain for photography tips. I still have a lot to learn (who doesn't?!), but it sure is fun. This camera sure does make it easy to get decent shots. :clap

The results can be found here.

I think someone is going to be hard pressed to regret a purchase like this. It is fun, and definitely worth it. Great lens and great camera. I just picked up a Canon 430EX flash as well, though I haven't done much shooting with it yet... so no test shots up yet.

Enjoy!

    That's great!

    Cool shots in there

44053749-L.jpg love this one - the expressions you caught are awesome - making ordinary way better! Good framing, interesting shadow/light play on Baldwanna's face.

It is the purpose of life that each of us strives to become actually what he is potentially. We should be obsessed with stretching towards that goal through the world we inhabit.

That's great to hear. It looks like I'm getting that Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for Christmas from the Mrs. All the positive feedback I hear about it makes me feel all the better in dropping all the hints between now and Dec. 25. :):

    Ben:

Thanks for this post. I just purchased the Rebel XT and it should be here next week.

Questions (and this will reveal my neophyte underbody)
    1. Is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di the only lens you have at this point?
    2. Is this a solid all purpose lens that I will be able to use for family shots as well as landscapes and limited action pictures?
    I appreciate any input.

    Thanks,

    Rich

The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Di was the first lens I bought after I obtained my 10D almost two years ago. I still own the lens, after I sold the 10D and bought a 20D. It is small, light, inexpensive as lenses go, and lives on my 20D. It is on my 20 right now as a matter of fact. Unless I need a specific purpose lens, it stays right there because it is a normal range zoom.
Optically it is very sharp. It does not focus as fast as a USM motored lens like the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L, but it is very serviceable for everything except fast sports shooting. It was fast enough focusing to grab this for me

My son in the picture is faster on his KTM than I am on my DR650. ne_nau.gif

My Tamron 28-75f2.8 Di made it over Hagerman Pass in Colorado in the tank bag on my R1150GS. This shot was taken with the Tamron lens. It has proven durable too. :): It has travelled at least 15,000 miles in my motorcycle tank bag without failure.thumb.gif

The gallery of the trip in September 2003 can be seen here - http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/gallery/23385/1

Most of the shots were done with a 10D and the Tamron lens - it is the only lens I brought - a few shots were done with a Canon G5 also.
