Bubbles in ice- flashback to cooler days

Trying to clean up last years image files. Went hiking in the Sierras in cold, but no snow conditions. This is one of the Laurel Lakes (Bloody canyon/Laurel Canyon area). No snow on the lake, should have brought ice skates, but bitterly cold and windy. Lake ice was about 3 feet thick, had no qualms walking on it.
1) The Lake
2) Bubble train A- Largest bubble here was probably a small woman's palm sized.
3) Bubble train B- Largest bubble here was probably a large man sized palm size.
Shooting these was really hard, not sure if I'll ever see the like again, but I wonder how I could have done better. Maybe wetted the surface of the ice to make the smaller imperfections disappear? Probably a tripod for better depth of field, but I kind of think it needs to out of focus areas to give perspective.

Thanks,
I've never seen anything like them before either, but then again, I haven't spent a lot of time on frozen lakes. We came up with half a dozen unsatisfactory explanations for them, I should try to find out more about how they form.
I didn't take too many landscape pictures. There was a biting wind, turned into a windstorm, no snow of course, even blew out our furnace while we were gone and came home to a cold house.
