First baby pictures
I usually hang out in the Challenges forum, but was only half satisfied by my recent photos of my new nephew, two days old when I took these shots.
Here is the type of picture I was hoping for SOOC.

I ended up boosting highlights about 80% and shadows 20% to get this effect, and I think the background is too dark, top and right are very heavy.
The setup, for one, was not the best. We improvised a backdrop by draping a fuzzy blanket over a la-z-boy recliner, had minimal natural light, an overhead incandescent light, and a reading lamp with a very cool temperature CFL bulb - almost blue, and the on-camera flash.
Some other semi hi-key shots

Any suggestions for improvement? I was hoping for something spectacular, for the baby arrival announcement card. By the time I get to take some more pictures he's going to be quite a bit bigger, but I'd be interested in hearing how some of the more accomplished portrait photographers here would have gone about this shoot with a limited setup equipment and time (only had maybe 20 minutes?)
