Hi! Just got a Nikon sb600. I paired it with my Nikon d90 but am unable to reduce the power of the flash when I use it off camera. Can anyone pls help me with step by step procedure.

Sure, here ya go:
Yes you can use the off camera sb600 as the only flash.
Go to custom settings
Bracketing/Flash
Flash control for built in flash
Set to commander
In the mode box set built in flash to -- or manual and reduce power
If you are shooting glass/metal or any reflective material the on camera flash may still appear in exposure. You can get an IR panel (about $20) to fit over the built in flash (Nikon SG-3IR) which will block the light coming from your on camera flash but still let the signal through to the off camera flash.
Just to be clear the built in flash does need to flash to send the signal to the sb600 but you can reduce its power so it has no effect on exposure by using the above.
