I am planning a road trip and am looking for lens suggestions for my Canon 30D, either a great single all around lens that is capable of excellent landscapes or perhaps a ultra wide such as Canon 10-22 or ??.

My current lenses consist of the following 18-55mm (kit), 28-135mm (kit), 50mm 1.4, 70-200mm f2.8

My Canon Crop 1.6x/APS-C travel kit consists of:

    Canon 40D
Sigma 10-20mm, f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM
    Canon EF-S 17-55mm, f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 70-200mm, f/4L IS USM
    Canon EF 50mm, f/1.4 USM
    Canon 1.4x teleconverter
Close focus adapter, 3.3 diopter, to fit the 50mm, f/1.4, gives about 1/2 lifesize.
    Sigma DG Super flash
    Charger and spare battery.

It is very enabling and I can recommend anything similar. It's not horribly heavy, fits a smaller bag, and it covers a tremendous number of opportunities and situations.

A possible recommended substitution for the Sigma super-wide zoom might be the Tokina 11-16mm, f2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX in Canon mount. It has better performance at large apertures and a much larger maximum aperture. Still the Sigma 10-20mm, f/4-5.6 is relatively lightweight and compact, and I have no intentions of replacing it anytime soon. Image quality, for how I use the lens, is actually very nice.

Would you prefer the Toknia 11-16mm over the Canon 10-22mm

Let me phrase it this way: The Canon EF-S 17-55mm, f/2.8 IS USM and Tokina 11-16mm, f2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX in Canon mount, make for wonderful travelling companions. If my Sigma 10-20mm, f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM fails, gets lost or stolen, the Tokina 11-16mm, f2.8 is going to be the replacement.

The Tokina 11-16mm, f2.8 has the rather startling capability as a full-frame superwide at 16mm too. The corners suffer a bit, but otherwise it's entirely usable. (I didn't believe it until I saw some examples.)

Another vote for the Tokina 11-16. Used it on our trip through Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Colorado.

I would also pick the Tokina 11-16 2.8
