The discussion on what constitutes documentary photography versus something else, including BDs found objects, made me remember this photo I posted a while back in "other cool shots". Found as is of course...

Very interesting, makes me wonder, who, what, where, why and how, but mostly why and the how? I like how the shoe is sitting on the post .

What's interesting is that it appears deliberate-- that shoe is either precariously balanced, or it's been nailed or glued on.

I agree, it does look glued on--or defying laws of gravity.

Yes, but how did the shoe get there, who does it belong to ,and why was it left behind.

When I find something out and about; and think someone may come back to look for it - I put it in clear view in case they do come back.

Was it deliberate, maybe yes, but perhaps not by the photog

Definitely not by the photog. As I said "found as is", that's what caught my eye. Clearly, "Western Cinderella" never came back to claim her lost shoe.

Really wonderful. And as you say - Who? What? Why? For how come? (As an old friend of mine used to ask) Or, put simply, WTF?! The only thing I might suggest would have made this even more powerful would have been to have shot it horizontally, and from a bit further back; close enough so that the shoe dominates, but wide enough to give us more sense of the isolation of the fence and the landscape.

Thanks for the comments and discussion. I agree that the photo opens a lot of questions best summarized by BD. I really don't know how the shoe ended up on the post or why it seems to defy gravity. I like the sense of desolation and abandon that the picture conveys, this is part of a slowly growing collection of photos on "faded splendor".

    Thanks for looking!

Love it. In the cattle country of the west cowboys often turn their worn out cowboy boots upside down over a fence post and nail them down. I am guessing this was either from a "modern" cowboy, or a cowgirl with a sense of humor. Either way, very fun shot and good irony. Life is not as fun without irony. thumb.gif
