Search Engine Optimisation

Hi,

I've had my smugmug site for a few months now, and I got my girlfriend to help me out putting keywords into my blurb which I hoped google etc would pick up on. However, this has had no effect thus far.

Only now have I realised that there is a part in the account settings for homepage meta description and homepage meta keywords, so I have filled that in. I have turned on my "google search visibility" etc....

Can anyone tell me how long I should expect to wait before Google etc starts to see me?

Many thanks for anybody who takes the time to answer me :)

Rob

    Hi Rob,

    I'm not sure what you mean by "putting keywords into my blurb". Do you mean you were adding keywords to your photos on SmugMug? More information on keywording your photos is available here.

    I wouldn't put too much importance into the 'homepage meta keywords' as I don't think Google pays too much attention to it. Keywording and captioning individual photos is much more important.

    Also check the SEO page for more suggestions on how to improve your search engine ranking.

    It may take weeks for Google to come by your site again so I wouldn't recommend waiting on it and rather focus on adding more photos and information to your site so that Google has something to go on the next time it comes back. Also you could start a blog where you feature some of your photos. Having other sites and blogs link back to you would help a lot as well.

    If you have further questions, also include a link to your site / the specific page you have questions about so we could take a look at it.

    I was under the impression that google etc picked up keywords that you had on your main page, such as the "about me" part of my page.

    I also have this in my Head Tag part of the site customizer

    <TITLE>Rob Golding Photography</TITLE>
    <META NAME="description" CONTENT="Rob Golding Photography">
    <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Gloucestershire Weddings Tewkesbury Cheltenham Photographer Portrait Photography">
    <META NAME="author" CONTENT="Rob Golding">

    But Google still does not find me if I search for "wedding photographer, tewkesbury" for example. It was then that I saw the SEO settings in the Account settings part of the site so I stuck the keywords in there a day or so ago hoping it would make a difference. So far it isn't helping much.

    My site is http://www.robgoldingphotography if you could like to have a look.

    I will try tagging the actual photographs, and see if that makes a difference.

    Thanks,

    Rob

    I've found the tagging option and have done this, will see how it helps :)

    Cheers,

    I wouldn't recommend adding this to your advanced customizer as it's pretty much duplicating what SmugMug adds for you. To add a site description / site keywords, go to the account settings > discovery > search.
    Also look at the "impressing google" section of the SEO page I linked to in my last post. Meta keywords are not really something Google uses much anymore.
    I would suggest that you follow all the suggestions given on the SEO page.
    And remember, it'll take time for any changes to show on Google as Google may not be back for weeks to update their index.
