Smugmug style gallery misbehaviour

When viewing my galleries using "SmugMug" style the Next> link does not cause display of the next photo in the gallery. It just displays the first photo in the gallery. Similarly, clicking on the <Prev link also just displays the first photo in the gallery.

Clicking on any photo in the thumbnails brings that photo up ok, but then clicking either the <Prev or Next> links cause only the first photo in the gallery to be displayed.

I have tried this on both Firefox and Safari and with and without plugins and with and without cookie restrictions but the behaviour is the same.

Curiously, when I select the Style "SmugMug Small" the "<" and ">" links both work correctly! For both styles the page forward and backward options seem to work ok.

Note that my galleries are configured to allow user style selection.

Is something broken at my end or is there something broken at the Smugmug end?

    Hi Gerry,

    Thanks for contacting SmugMug support.
I have checked one of your galleries:
    http://photosbygerry.smugmug.com/Volleyball/Unisport-volleyball/2011-AUG-volleyball-days4-5/19684910_dLSDcv#!i=1544368302&k=B3K9qfn

And the < > arrows works perfectly. What web browser are you using? Try emptying the cache in your web browser. Here is a great instruction on how to do that - just pick the web browser that you have and follow the instructions:

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Take care,

I have some more questions / things you can check on:

On what operating system and browser versions do you see this?

Is it only happening on that one computer?

Do you also see the issue on another site? Try this gallery.

If the issue seems to be browser independent (and also shows with all browser addons / extensions disabled), do you have any antivirus, firewall, ad blocking or Internet security software do you have installed? If so which one? It might be interfering with your site.

It wasn't the <> arrows, it was the <Prev and Next> which don't work

Thanks for getting back to me Tom.

The "<" and ">" only show up for me when I choose gallery Style "SmugMug Small" and they do work. The ones that do not work for me are the "<Prev" and "Next>" in the gallery Style "SmugMug.

I have tried clearing the cache etc and further extended my tests and will add further information shortly in reply to a Rainforest1155 below.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions Sebastian.

On my iMac the problem occurs in both Safari (Version 6.0) and Firefox (version 14.0.1). Both are the latest software for my system which is currently running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). For both browsers I prevent 3rd Party Cookies and have the respective Do Not Track options enabled, and in Firefox I also select which sites are allowed to save Cookies.

Just to clarify my problem: When viewing any gallery using the Style SmugMug (and not the Style "SmugMug Small" ) the "Next>" and "<Prev" links/buttons do not work (always take me to the first photo in the gallery). When using the Style "SmugMug Small" both the "<" and ">" links/buttons work as expected (the "<Prev" and "Next>" are not shown in the SMugMug Small style).

I followed your link to the Support Heroes gallery and I get the problem there too.

I then tried Private browsing on both Safari and Firefox but the problem remains. On Safari I have only a single extension and the problem remains when that is disabled. When I Reset Safari (clears all cache, history, forms, etc, etc) and enabled all cookies the problem remained. On Firefox I have many extensions and plugins but the problem remains even when they are all disabled and all cookies are enabled.

Interestingly, the problem does not occur with Safari on my iPad2 nor with Firefox (4.0.1) on my Ubuntu system. That is, the "<Prev" and "Next>" work as expected. When I open my gallery (linked in Tom's reply above) using Ubuntu or my iPad2, I get shown a gallery with thumbnails in a 3 across 4 down array with the current photo shown larger to fit. The Style drop down shows SmugMug is selected, BUT there is no Style "SmugMug Small" listed. If the first photo is selected then "<Prev" is not shown.

When the same gallery is opened on my Mac (Safari or Firefox) it shows thumbnails in a 3 x 5 array (not 3 x 4 as on iPad/Ubuntu) and when the first photo is selected "<Prev" is shown dimmed. And Style includes a SmugMug Small. So there is a difference in the way SmugMug is rendering the pages for the different devices (probably for screen size?).

Firefox shows link information when hovering with the mouse and it can be saved using right click. This allowed me to discover that the link for "Next>" on the Mac is different to that on Ubuntu. Specifically:

Mac Firefox Next> URL when on pic1
    http://photosbygerry.smugmug.com/Volleyball/Unisport-volleyball/2011-AUG-volleyball-days4-5/19684910_dLSDcv/1/1544364845

Mac Firefox Next> URL when on pic5 is exactly the same ie
    http://photosbygerry.smugmug.com/Volleyball/Unisport-volleyball/2011-AUG-volleyball-days4-5/19684910_dLSDcv/1/1544364845

Ubuntu Firefox Next> URL when on pic1
    http://photosbygerry.smugmug.com/Volleyball/Unisport-volleyball/2011-AUG-volleyball-days4-5/19684910_dLSDcv/#!i=1544364845&k=hPPq3pS

Ubuntu Firefox Next> URL when on pic5
    http://photosbygerry.smugmug.com/Volleyball/Unisport-volleyball/2011-AUG-volleyball-days4-5/19684910_dLSDcv/#!i=1544364845&k=N6D5K4z

As you would expect, the link is different when on a different photo for Ubuntu but not on my Mac. This seems to suggest that the Next> link is incorrect or incomplete for my Mac. Whether this is due to SmugMug rendering or something on my system is as yet unknown.

Is it possible that the link length is too long and something on the Mac doesn't like it?
Is it an error at the SmugMug end??

    Anybody help?

    Gerry,

I have tried to replicate this issue on 3 different browsers - Mac - Firefox, Safari and Chrome - without a success. As you said - you are able to flip the photos on your iPad or on your UBUNTU installation. It looks like there is something on your computer that is interfering with the site.

Do you have any antivirus/firewall/security software installed on your Mac - that could cause the behaviour?

Also - please make sure that JAVASCRIPT is enabled in your web browser. Here you can find some instructions on how to enable it:
    http://enable-javascript.com/

Just choose the browser that you are using and the instruction will appear.

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Take care,

    Tom

    Problem Solved!
Thanks for your tests and suggestions Tom. They lead me to test a few more things and to solve my problem.

For those who may be interested, I run Intego VirusBarrier as a virus scanner and for other secrity and privacy purposes. Recently I enabled it's feature to allow hiding certain information from websites (ie filter browser headers to exclude identifying and tracking information). Specifically, the option called "Hide information about my computer and web browser".

This resulted in my browser requests (any and all of them) to a website (eg SmugMug) being modified by VirusBarrier so that the browser was shown as Mozilla/5.0 but other info, such as, cpu brand, OS, rendering engine version and computer model were set to nonsense (0s and Ds for some reason). When the option called "Hide information about my computer and web browser" was disabled, SmugMug galleries started working correctly again (on both Firefox and Safari). Interestingly I also got back the sliding Info box which, I had thought incorrectly, might have disappeared due to the latest gallery changes.

I am still puzzled as to why SmugMug defaulted to rendering pages which were broken, i.e. links that were truncated and broken, and the addition of a gallery style called SmugMug Small which does not otherwise seem to appear (at least on my Mac). Maybe there is something not quite right with the defaults which could be affecting others, now or in the future.

But at least my problem is resolved. rolleyes1.gifclap.gifbarb

Thanks again Tom and Sebastion for your assistance.

    Gerry,

Not sure why exactly this was behaving like that - maybe contacting the customer service at VirusBarier would help?

I am glad that the issue is over now for you :)

    Gerry,

I'm glad to hear that. :)

It sounds likely that modifying your user agent would throw off our system as we may serve you up pages specifically optimized for the browser you're using. If your security software hides what browser you're using or pretends that you're using a different browser, things likely go wrong.

SmugMug small doesn't make as much use of javascript and thus doesn't much care what browser you're using which is why it still worked while the default SmugMug style didn't.
