Search engines finding images in Smart but not Unlisted?

I would like to set up smart galleries based on certain keywords and have them searchable by Google, et al. BUT I'd like to unlist the original galleries, as they contain hundreds of photos that are uploaded simply for archive purposes, and I don't want to burden (and frighten!) searchers with such an abundance of chaff, but rather the wheat only. I guess I can separate them before I upload, but what a chore, and I already have smart galleries.
So, is there a way?

There's not a way to do that using Smart Galleries. The collected images will retain the original gallery settings. The unlisted galleries are not searchable.

What you can do is make a copy of the images and move the copies to the gallery. There, they will be able to have stand alone settings.

Hope that will work for you!

Yikes... I sure didn't realize that so looks like I'd best be making some changes. Thanks Lindy!

That's problematic, too. I have to find the photos that I want to copy. They happen to be ones that have a certain keyword. The only way I know to find them by keyword is by collecting or making a smart gallery. If I try to do it via any other group selection method, I can't see the keywords, just thumbnails, and some of my galleries have hundreds of photos. Any way I look at it, it's an almost insurmountable task.
