Butterfly ID needed: is this some kind of fritillary?

Went out hunting Monarchs in the Adirondacks recently, and while I found some of them, I found a lot more of these along with the Monarchs (in the same plants). These are much smaller. The orange on the top of the wings is similar to that on the Monarchs, but the bottom of the wings, particularly the back one, is completely different, as you can see. There are at least 4 species of fritillary in the Adirondacks, but the pictures I have found for them are inconsistent. Anyone know what these are? C&C welcome, of course. Both were with a 50D and a 100mm macro, no extension.

Looks like a painted lady -Vanessa cardui - we get in the UK - don't know if you get them there.

Many thanks. I think you've got it. There are indeed three Vanessa species in the Adirondacks, including Vanessa cardui. The images I found indeed look similar.
