Hi there,
I'm just wondering if there is an easy way to get comments from Smugmug into Aperture without copying and pasting for hours on end?

Let me give you just a quick look into my workflow to help you understand what I'm doing. It's a huge family history project.
  1. Scan Photos
  2. colour correct photos in Aperture
  3. Write in the known who/what/when/where etc into the caption field in Aperture
  4. Export over to Smugmug
  5. Send a link to all the relatives and ask them to comment on the photos to try to fill in any missing or additional information
  6. Copy and paste their comments back into Aperture
  7. Make an Aperture book with the photos and all the information from the comments and captions for all family members.
    Enjoy the books!

Let me know what you think!

Sorry, exporting comments in Aperture is not possible since it's not a part of the image - not from what I have ever seen in Aperture, at least.

But, the LR publisher will sync comments written in the gallery to the publish folder if Lightroom is possibly an option for you.

    Captions
    Hi

I have a similar issue with regard to thousands of images I have on SmugMug to which I've added captions. There is a need to make a copy of these images to hand over to my local University and I can't simply download them from SmugMug otherwise I lose this essential caption information.

I'd be grateful for an expanded explanation of what KevinW means when he refers to the Lightroom option - I use Aperture and am not really familiar with Lightroom.

Is there any way even of getting, say, a CSV file of captions from each gallery?

    Regards.

You could take a look at the WinDownload tool in the downloaders section here. It includes caption and keywords in the files in the format that Windows uses so that the caption and keywords show up in Windows Explorer and if you right-click and select properties > details. If you'd need the metadata as IPTC, I'm sure there's a tool to transfer that Windows metadata over to IPTC as well.
