Why am I just finding out about Content Aware in CS5?

Crazy... I've had CS5 since launch and although I was aware of some fancy shmancy tool for cloning called Content Aware, I never bothered to try it. Until this morning.

You guys may remember this shot. The tilted horizon has always bugged me but if I simply straightened it, the kids hand would be cropped at the wrist. I was too lazy to try and clone in a bunch of the sky and stuff. I did just that in CS5, using Content Aware, in like 2 minutes. Expanded the canvas. Straightened it. Select the white areas of the canvas and then used the Content Aware fill to replace it. Couple strokes with the healing brush and done.

SO AWESOME!

For me, it only works well where you fortuitously chose to apply it. When you select to add to a border or remove something objectionable at a border, CA is fantastic. I've not had much luck using this feature in the center of most photos.

I have the same experience as Mitchell.

Sometimes it's a one step fix. Others may take repeated applications or some cloning to blend it together.

By the way, the tool has been improved and CA expanded to other tools in CS6. Not enough reason to upgrade by itself but nice to have.

By the way, love the image.

Woooow, nice results. I've only used it for taking out little distractions... I'll have to take another look at it :p

    And great picture :)

In nearly every case it's worked extremely well and has cut much valuable time by doing most of the work. I know it's not always perfect but it saves a bundle of time. Really like the fix by the way on an already great shot.

I agree with Rey, at least with my experience with this shot. CA automated about 90% of the work. I did have to go back and do some minor touch up but that beats doing it all manually. Honestly, even if it gets me 40% there, it works. IMO, of course.

IMO, Photoshop's Content Aware Fill is superior to the Content Aware Brush of Photoshop Elements....

Great isn't it.. Try CS6 content aware patch and moving objects in the picture around in a heartbeat.
