Bernadette is a Maltese mix female that we rescued from a San Bernadino, California shelter (thus the name, Bernadette) two weeks ago along with her litter of five 1-week old puppies.
She was filthy and vermin infested and she looked like and acted like a Tasmanian Devil. She was very protective over her puppies and would snarl whenever someone came near them. This is what Bernadette and her five pups looked like when we (American Maltese Rescue) got them from the shelter...
Here she is a few hours after she arrived at our home. After two baths, she was still dirty and still didn't trust us near her puppies...
After two weeks of TLC, Bernadette is clean and she trusts us to touch her puppies. She is now a relaxed happy mom, knowing that her puppies are safe and that she will have plenty to eat and drink. She eats an enormous quantity of food to support five puppies who, in aggregate, weigh as much as she does.
We think that the puppies were fathered by a Shitzu or a Llassa Apso. They are really cute!
