Hi Y'all,

I have been posting most of my Soth Africa captures in a thread in the Journeys Forum. I figured it was time to drop a few in Wildlife.

I love shooting in Africa and this was my second visit with a third scheduled for 2/13. I shot primarily with the D800E and the D4. My Fuji X-100 and my D3s got some use also. I had originally planned on using the D4 as my main body but after reviewing the images from the first two days the the D800E became my main body. Marc Muench did a video of us discussing the D800's performance on the trip.

Leopard -D4 with the 200-400, ISO 6400

lionesses - D800E with the 70-200, ISO 800

Lilac breasted roller - D4 with the 200-400 ISO 800

calf nursing - D800E with the 200-400 -ISO 1600

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Harry, what great variety! I love the light on the lionesses. And that bird is so colorful! So glad you have such grand trips planned for the next year. Best, Pam

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

Thanks John I hope you enjoy your next additions. Marc Muench did a good job on the video except for keeping me in the shadows.

So...I'm thinking that maybe that Giraffe was a little harder to get in the frame then lets say a heron!?rolleyes1.gif

    Excellent.

Thanks Pam. In Africa our game drives started at sunrise and ended around 11 AM. We then rested until around 2 PM when we did our second game drive which lasted until sunset. The light in those hours was usually outstanding. The birds in Africa had incredible colors which I wish our local birds in the States could have.

Just a tad Ric. Giraffes are a real challenge to shoot. If you go for a horizontal comp you can't get real close to the subject. I did most of my giraffe captures (especially for the mature giraffes) with a vertical comp.

Nope, I can't think of a better place to shoot than Africa. I am totally hooked on Africa and intend to get back there every year.
