Stepping down from Pro to the next level down

So since SM decided to raise their price, I'm stepping down from Pro to whatever is next. I have actually considered this in the past, but every time my renewal comes up, I forget and it renews me automatically.

Why can't I just downgrade now, 6 months before my renewal? That way I don't forget.

Pretty sure you can, and I think you get a pro-rated (no pun intended) refund for the difference.

I have asked twice now and both times I get the "when your renewal time comes around, contact us" response.

You can absolutely downgrade now - but really there's no point in doing that, John - the TOS you agreed to doesn't provide for prorated refunds or anything like that. So set a reminder for a week or so prior to your renewal, then contact the heroes to downgrade. There are things you have to do on your end, like removing watermarks and such - they will help you with all of that.

    Hi John

There is a tool in your control panel that allows you to manage the downgrade, but the account change is immediate. We've created a tool that will take care of watermark removal etc. for you if you choose an account level below portfolio. See our help page about doing this:

    http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/91812

What you need to decide is whether you want to give up the features you've paid for, for the remainder of your subscription. You've got access to all of the Business tools until then so why not make the best of them?

Actually, if you downgrade now, you get a credit that shows up in your "Referral Credits"... It's not a refund, but, it will save you money if you intend to stay with SmugMug.

Right, but he said he wanted to downgrade now, so when it renews, that he won't have been charged for the higher-priced account. So, IF he's staying, he can downgrade now and get the credit for the next renewal. Of course, if he's leaving and moving to greener pastures, then the credit is kinda pointless.

Yeah,I just downgraded to the power user. We'll see in awhile if I stay. Crazy thing is, I had to fill out an online tax thing because....get this...I made the huge net profit of 3 cents! Woot! Just hope I don't go crazy with the cash! Lol

As for watermarking, I can't recall if I set that for any photos or not. Don't really care

Yes, it's by design that the system doesn't allow you to change the account level if you've made any sales until you've filled out the tax&payment info form. That's to ensure that users don't accidentally go to a lower level without us having a means to pay them their unpaid profit.

If you don't care about the unpaid profits you have and want to change the account level without filling out the form, you can always contact our HelpDesk.

Watermarks should be automatically removed if you change your account level via the account settings.
