If i change the name on my smugmug account, is that going to break all my image links on dgrin that aren't to galleries where I hid the owner's name?
Yeah, if you recognize the avatar, new user name.

Hi Kolibri - That is the case... images are premalinked on your SmugMug account. You can move them between galleries etc and external links will not break, but changing your account name alters your core URL, and that will break links for externally embedded images.

If you're goal is to change your forward facing name (branding etc), and you have a POWER account or higher, you do have an alternative -

Adding a custom domain/hostname would allow you to alter your forward facing URL from you.smugmug.com to you.com in any manner you wish (providing the domain name is available) - initiating this feature will leave all existing links intact!

Are you 100% sure about that? If I change just the username in this URL, it still works:

    This even works. :D
    http://photos.smugmug.com/SomeWhereOnSmug/344291068_HdnTo-M.jpg

or this but redirects to the users name.

    http://cdn.smugmug.com/SomeWhereOnSmug/344291068_HdnTo-M.jpg

Or this and completely hides your site.

Well jeez, John - I was when I posted it. headscratch.gif But now? Not so much - mebbe I'm behind in how our image keys work. I can say I'm 100% sure that that USED to be the case -

/me is off to test (but I would be a fool to bet against jfriend) -

The part of it that I can't test is actually renaming an account. I do know that the username does not have to be correct as long as the imageID/imageKey is there in an otherwise properly constructed URL. Let us know what your test results are.

Hi John - yup, but I can -

Phase 1 complete - this direct link:

    http://demosite3.smugmug.com/FamilyStuff/My-first-Gallery/24642754_jXrZNH#!i=2014211562&k=HB8vhmJ&lb=1&s=A

For a test account that I changed the name of (to demosite10) continues to function -

Stand by - because the hard part for me is testing it on an embedded image (vs direct) -

Ummmm - anyone have any issue with me trying that in this thread?

Looks like as long as the link is using any nickname link with "smugmug" in it Smug redirects to the photo.
Don't think domain changes will work.

The question is whether it redirects to the current account holders domain that owns that image (no matter what the domain has been changed to) or whether it redirects to the original domain only and if it redirects to the original subdomain, does it still work. Worth testing with an actual account rename.

    . . . but I would be a fool to bet against jfriend . . .

My dad taught me a few things - little truisms that, at the time, seemed trivial, but over the years have stuck with me and proven out time and again. One VERY good one was, "If a man ever comes up to you and wants to bet he can do [fill in the blank], don't take the bet. He can."

You're 100% correct John/Allen - I'm super outdated in image key functionality - bowdown.gif - but some of us learned something today.

To clarify, changing the account name (nickname/url etc) has no effect on image links and embedded photos (anymore > I had to stick that in for my own ego).

The internet does not know to go to a Smugmug site if the domain is different.
Any smugmug.com will get to the Smug site and Smug look up the photo.

No, that's not true. The subdomain DNS server is Smugmug's and it returns a valid web page even with a non-existent subdomain.

    For example: http://dkd8eot8329cv.smugmug.com/

    Or this: http://dkd8eot8329cv.smugmug.com/Kenya/Highlights/Landscapes/JF23827/344291068_HdnTo-M.jpg

I'm really good at beta testing, i can usually be counted on to crash software if possible, and to try to do things that nobody thought a user would try to do. Apparently, I'm also good at stress testing support heroes ;)

odd thing is, I don't really care quite so much if my dgrin links break when I eventually change my smug name (once I come up with a good one), i was just curious, and I come back and this turns out to be one of the longer threads I've started ;)

It's nice to know this though, I'm sure other people would care more if their links break.

    cute puppies!
    Thanks all!

Interesting to know. I thought that it would work the way John illustrated, but wasn't sure. Now I have the answer if I ever need it. thumb.gif
