I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

It looks like a little iron ore in that wash, could the green be copper? (or moss)

    Hey Rags,

I'm not at all sure what elements are causing these colors....I am sure that the green is not due to moss.

    Tom,

While looking at these shots, it occurred to me that sometimes beauty and wonder are dependent upon location ne_nau.gif

While a striking show of natures beauty within Yellowstone, I suspect that if this showed up near our homes, there would be a massive biological/hazardous effort underway rolleyes1.gif

I suspect that you're absolutely right, Randy. I know that if this stuff showed up near my house, I'd have a wife and 5 cats perched on my shoulders as I hoofed it down the road.

That stuff sure does make for some wonderful art/abstracts. Do they put out warnings if you get any of it on your shoes? Maybe a sign that says 'Don't Touch'? Where does it go? I don't see anything growing in it's path .. scary. Your first photo looks like it's gonna dump right onto my keyboard.

    Hi Mary,

I'll give the park folks all the credit in the world....they warn you every way they can to stay away from this stuff. They tell you that some of this stuff will eat your shoes up very quickly. Even worse, the earth's top crust in a lot of these basin areas is extremely thin....I personally saw some that was in the 3 inch range....and a number of people have gotten to areas they shouldn't have, only to fall through the crust and been scalded to death. Going by the park's own published material, there have been hundreds of other people that, over the years, have been horribly burned.

Yeah, the mantra here is " Look But Don't Touch " and whatever you do, don't venture off into areas off the approved paths. A lot of people who have chosen to ignore rules and guidelines have ended up paying a severe price for their stupidity.
