I am going to be at Bosque del Apache on October 8-10 2012 and would be glad to have some advice on good locations to shoot or best techniques. I have read up on many of the blogs and guides, but would be glad to hear more about this "bucket list" photo shoot. If anyone is in the area I would be glad to have them along for company.

    Hey Randy,

You will have a blast at Bosque. I have never seen sweeter light before or since I went there.

The best locations change from year to year and sometimes from day to day.

If you Google Bosque del Apache Photography (tips) you will get a plethora of links. Every photographer known to man has shot there and has some tips and info about Bosque.

Dress in layers as you will start before sunrise and it gets real cold there and then warms up thoughout the day. I used hand warmers in my gloves at the start of the day. Most folks shoot from sunrise until 10-11 AM and then head back to Socorro for lunch and a nap. Then its back to Bosque for the afternoon/sunset shoot.

You should definitely bring a tripod. For many of your captures you will be dealing with mutiple subjects with gorgeous backgrounds. The typical wildlife technique of shooting with the aperture wide open doesn't work for many of the photo ops at Bosque.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Bosque is great, I've been there a few times. You can see all sorts of birds there. I even saw Harry there once. :D

However, most people go in the winter or spring to see the huge flocks of Sand Hill Cranes and Snow Geese that winter there. Fall is too early for the migration, so you'll be looking at more permanent residents like ducks, harriers and hawks. Maybe you'll spot an occasional deer or coyote there too.

Personally, I would find a different destination for an October trip.
