Smug Vault

Have spoken to help desk this morning re Smug Vault - but still having trouble understanding how it all works.

The way I understand it is - you cannot choose to upload to the vault.
You upload your dng files or raw files as you normally would if you are uploading a jpg file to an album in smugmug.
The dng file will automatically divert to the smug vault - and it will show up in an icon in your album on your smug mug site.
My files are currently on remote hard drives and are sorted into folders named by date and place.
Therefore I would have to create albums on my smugmug site and name them exactly the same as the folders on my hard drives - and upload to the respective albums.
That way I will be able to find the photo I need when I need it.
I have hundreds of folders of my hard drives - therefore I will have hundreds of albums on smug mug to contain the icons of the smugvault items.
Can visitors to my site see all these icons from the smug vault.
I must be thick but I am not getting a clear understanding how this all works, from reading the smugmug help site or from the help desk.
I signed up for smug mug vault this morning and now seriously wondering if I done the right thing.
Am I the only one this confused about a simple thing?

Can someone please shed a light on whether I have a correct understanding of smugvault. Thanks

    Edit:
I give up trying to find out how exactly smugvault works - deleting my vault account - will find another provider.
    Thank you

Even though it might be too late, I'm still going to answer the questions I read out of your post.

Files in SmugVault are kept in regular galleries. If you don't wish visitors to see those galleries that just contain your SmugVault files, you could unlist the galleries. Unlisted galleries don't show on your homepage for visitors. More details on unlisting galleries can be found here.

Within a gallery, SmugVault items are not visible to visitors unless there's a preview for the SmugVault file, in which case the visitor could see that preview image.

To make organization easier for you, you could make use of categories and subcategories. You could create a category for your SmugVault galleries to keep them all together. Using categories / subcategories is explained in detail in this post.
If your homepage is set to display all galleries, you could also change it to display categories instead ("show categories or galleries" section).

I've never been happy with the way Smug Vault works, there have almost always been issues. The responsiveness of the support team has been great, but I think the product itself is flawed.

Just waiting for Mosaic Archive to be launched for Windows, then bye bye SV.

    Hi Jeff,

I am sorry to hear that you haven't been satisfied with SmugVault. Is there something in particular I can address for you?
