Nikon SU-800 question

Playing around firing my SB-910 in a softbox with the SU-800 on camera. There was a time where I was seeing the pre-flash fire, but the actual flash wasn't. It was strange, I was seeing the flash, but realized I wasn't hearing the recycle beep. Sure enough all of those frames were dark. I turned the flash off, and back on and adjusted the position a bit thinking that maybe it was some line of sight issue.
Anybody experience this? Is it just line of sight, or something else?
