South Sister from Sparks Lake

Drove out to Central Oregon and back (450 mile round trip) yesterday to try to get South Sister & Broken Top from Sparks Lake. Sparks lake... a 10 foot deep mountain marsh lake was dried up... :cry I hiked a bit into the marshland that should have been the lake and set up for a couple shots near a stream running through the field.
By the time I got back to my car, all the hunters were getting up (opening weekend is 1 week earlier this year.... :scratch) with only having 1/4 tank of gas and 25 miles to town... all the hunters with their trigger happy kids... I didn't feel safe to explore on my limited gas tank.. kind of busted my weekend... I will have to try this trip again when I can camp overnight and explore to my hearts content.
Here are 3 images that I did take... c&c welcome.

Still looks like a beautiful location with these captures.

I am told on another forum I didn't go far enough to see the lake... I am asking for better info on where the access is, as it's not off the main road like it appears to be.
I am going to plan a weekend photo/camp trip for mid-summer next year - if it's warm enough, early spring... there was frost on the ground yesterday so I bet it gets plenty cold up there. Maybe we'll have to plan on trip together, I know my wife would rather me not do that alone....
