From my latest trip up to Yosemite a few weeks ago. I tried to include some type of foreground element and found this rock/tree for this composition.

Your on the right path but the tree is lost in the background because it is the same tone(brightness) as the mtns behind it. I think that would work very well. Try bringing the tree up so that it cuts across the horizon (if thats possible without taking a tumble down to the valley).
