How could I not respond to this one. There's something oddly consistent about your use of space in the frame. It's usually off balance in some form and there are normally two elements that connect. In this case, your son centred in the lower part ties to the person in the upper right through the striped jumpers. The large stones just in front of him give the weight needed to keep the left from feeling empty. The structure creates tension.
On to the harsh bit. It's a good scene, but I'm not feeling a strong emotional connection. Not knowing what's in his hands maybe? Not seeing more of his eyes filled with curiosity maybe? Dunno.
Yeah, it's missing something. I agree that the geometry is there, but you can't see the oyster shell in his hand. That and maybe a glance my way would make it work.
