Experimenting with the D4 and the 200-400 f/4. First time ever shooting in a night. Had to run the D4 at 25600 to keep the shutter at 1/400.

C&C on the net result are appreciated. Too much noise left in the b/g?

I think the left b/g is fine. Is noise reduction turned on in camera? I used my 1Dx up to 51k but I have it turned off, which is why I ask. Noise reduction in camera, at least for me seems to muddy photos up, so I keep it off...

Just for comparison, I needed to go even higher, but this is 25k on a 1dx, 1/1000@f4

Jim, you are right. I somehow had it set to NORMal, which I know better than to do. :bash

I just ran a bit of an experiment shooting some unlit candles in my house @ ISO 25K f/4 1/500 like last night w/ and w/o in-camera NR. Firstly, the in-camera NR doesn't do much to help. The image still requires work after the fact. The NR may only be applied to the JPG image, which I wasn't using anyhow. Of additional interest, according to the manual, even if set to OFF, there is some amount of in-camera NR happening above ISO 3200 (pg 302 of the D4 manual). In theory, this too, would only be applied to generating a JPG and not RAW files.

The image above has NR applied in LR4.

As to what happened, it was a pretty solid collision:

    1. I love the ripple in his cheek from the impact....

    2. And how un-phased he seems afterwards...

    and the the one above.

Redid my experiment w/ JPG enabled in the camera, and though there may be a slight be more fidelity in the non-NR RAW (though it could be any number of other factors), there is clear NR being applied in the JPG's between NORM and OFF. So I think my softness in the image may be from being a bit heavy-handed in the NR in LR. I don't have NoiseNinja. I didn't like the results from Noiseware relative to the LR results.

No, but the D4 was the plan when I transitioned from Canon. Lens is in an evaluation phase.
