Canon's "STM" designation stands for "Stepper Motor" as the type of autofocus motor technology. Stepper motors are nothing new in terms of motor technologies, they have been used for decades as positioning motors for impact computer printer heads, but I do believe that Canon is the first to use them as focus motors for lenses.

Since it's possible to know the absolute focus position from this type of motor drive technology, I suspect that soon we will see dSLR bodies capable of automated accurate and repeatable rack focus and follow focus in video applications.

As it is, stepper motors should provide similar performance to the USM motors currently used in Canon's better and best lenses.
