Hey Y'all,

Scott Borne and The Olympic Mountain School Press iare planning a new book called Avian Beauty - North America's Best Bird Photography.

They are seeking submissions and will include around 200 of them in the book. They hope to increase the public's awareness and access to outstanding bird photography, encourage conservation efforts and a portion of the proceeds from the book will go to national bird conservation groups.

You can get more info and submission guidelines at http://www.avianbeauty.com/

I recently attended my area's local wildlife festival. At the festival a number of pros displayed their work. While I was viewing their excellent work I thought to myself "I see better stuff posted on Dgrin every day". So if you are asking yourself "does my work have a chance at being selected", the answer is yes.

They say that you have until May 15, 2006 to submit your work (up to 10 images) but I wouldn't wait too long.

I'll stick it later on. I think that some folks ignore stickies so I'm going to leave it as is for a bit and then stick it later on today.

Sounds a great opportunity and a lot of fun. You're sure now it is just birds of North America and not Birds of the World?? Not one kookaburra or lorikeet? No. Bother.

Hope the "acceptances" will be advised here when finalised: totally agree a lot of the bird photography on d-grin is way better than much that gets published.

    Hey Ben,

If one of my shots is lucky enough to be selected I'll be doing handstands.
So far I've selected these two shots to submit (they have both done well in contests).

I think Jeff may give you a tussle for the end shot. :D Its going to be extremely tough to make the cut. I'm going to submit shots of some of the lesser shot birds like the limpkin and the black-bellied whistling ducks.

I'm pretty sure that my egret and eagle shots will be easily topped by some better photographers.

:uhoh Really? ne_nau.gif Nah.. I'm going to send off some of the common birds (egrets, herons, ibis, flamingos, pelicans etc.) Time to find out where the shots stand. No sense running from other photog's shots. I figure it's easier to shoot birds I'm familiar with....and more likely to capture a "keeper". There are tricks one picks up after shooting the same birds over and over and over and... rolleyes1.gif I think I can shoot snowy egrets with my eyes closed at this point. :uhoh

If the reason floats your boat then its cool.

"They are seeking submissions and will include around 200 of them in the book. They hope to increase the public's awareness and access to outstanding bird photography, encourage conservation efforts and a portion of the proceeds from the book will go to national bird conservation groups."

Now if I was a highly paid pro I probably wouldn't make any submissions.

I saw that one sentence, but no other refrerence to charitable donations, no specifics.

Let's just say I'm leery of these kinds of deals, the ones that promise not to charge you for the right to use your photos to make money.

Thank god for bringing that up. Now I don't have to make any hard decisions re photos.

I remember back in school, I was very leery of anything, like honors, or anything, that might appear to be with the purpose of selling ME a book. My daughter got one, I was always suspicious. Then I got into a legitimate honor society and turned down something that I have always regretted, so I guess it is an individual decision.

I did not enter the last Day In The Life Of............... I was afraid that was to get me to buy the book and who knows.................

The folks behind the project have excellent reps (i.e. -Scott Bourne, Arthur Morris, Greg Downing).

For me to make a submission is no big deal because I don't sell my photos (too much like the 'W' word). If I got one of my shots in the book (unlikely) I would get a cheap thrill. I doubt if the book will be a major seller and its unlikely that all that much money will be realized out of it. If it was a scam it wouldn't be worth the effort. There are much more profitable scams out there.

IN June I can see hundreds of Eagles at one time. They fish together...
