Just gotta tell someone, someone who cares...
After months of internal struggle, moments ago, I just ordered the Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 VR II from my preferred online vendor.
Now the hard part...
Waiting for arrival.

Thanks!
Pray tell, what is the purpose of the replacement foot? Is the one on the lens not functional?
That's how I felt after I ordered the 5dII last week, and I'm sure the anticipation will be even worse when it's the 5dIII!!!
No point in the replacement foot if you are going to handhold the lens.

Everything I hear is that it's a great lens. As they say in the Italy "Mazel Tov".

I bought a used one from a fellow degrinner and I love love it. It is so heavy my monopod cannot keep it still for me but I am old and weak lol.
SOO how about using it for a new profile pic?

I may on occasion use a monopod. What is the issue with the foot?
And you use it VERY well!
Thanks, it's still a work in progress. Gotta set aside some more time/dedication to put in finishing touches. I like working on it about as much as I like post work!:D
I wasn't aware the 80-200 came in a version with VR. I had a 80-200 2.8 for a bit and although it was spectacular on my film bodies I found it to be soft between 150 and 200mm on my D-700 and sold it.
Are you related to my wife? Nag, nag , nag! I've got the old part covered just fine but think I may have just enough strength left.
I can't wait to see some kids' portraits from you with this lens.
It is, without question, the most versatile lens I own. I have no problem with the Nikon foot. I do use a rather long Arca-Swiss plate on it.
Natural selection is responsible for every living thing that exists.
D3s, D500, D5300, and way more glass than the wife knows about.
can't wait to see pics!

You'll enjoy it a lot.

Doubt very much that I'll be using this lens for any of my vintage kids work. The focal length isn't right for the way I have things set up paint by numbers. I got it more for trying my hand at indoor sports, theater, dance and outdoor portraiture. I doubt it will ever see a tripod and hopefully the existing foot will work okay with my Manfroto monopod.
First ones I take will be posted here!
As I said above, I'm hoping my Bogen/Manfrotto monopod with work with the existing foot. If not, I'm open to recommendations.
I sure hope so Carlos. 2400.00 is the most I've ever spent on a lens. That's what took me so long to take the plunge. Although I'm excited about it, it's still hard for me to accept. I take solace in the fact that it should hold its value quite nicely.
Do you use those lens's on DX or FX bodies?
Mostly FX bodies such as D3, but I have done pretty well with DX bodies.
With DX, vignetting is going to be present, remember that, just trial and error, in which I'm outstanding at the error part :-)

Wide open, compression and the bg just melts away!

It never gets easier, you just get better.
My daughter just went to her last homecoming and my son just went to his first.

Mitchel, if your experience is anything like mine, you can relax a bit. My boy graduated two years ago. There is no comparison. My girl is like a full time job. The boy was like being on vacation. Don't remember if I commented on your thread or not, but that add/poster you did of your daughter was spectacular.
Initial thoughts on the new 70-200mm VRII. Came home to the new lens last night. After unpacking and checking things over, cleaning off the factory grease etc. I put it through a few tests. Shot some test charts for focus, back and front etc and the lens passed with flying colors. Was really surprised on how well it performed both at 70mm and 200mm.
This morning, I did a walkaround with it a took shots outside. First thing I noticed was how snappy the auto focus was. I don't think I own a lens, primes included that is quite as fast. I certainly can see the benefits of this lens for doing sports, photojournalism, plays, dance etc. HOWEVER, I'm not sure that I gain anything at all over my 105mm 2.8 as a portrait lens. All things being equal, the size/weight difference between the two, I'm not sure I will use the 70-200 a whole lot as an outdoor portrait lens.
Again, this is just first impression and I haven't shot a portrait subject with it yet. If you have experience with this lens and would like to weigh in on the reasons I might use the 70-200 vs the 105mm for portraits I would be most eager to hear.
Thanks.
