Keywording images question

I've been thinking I should keyword my images when I upload them to my website. I've never done it before, but we're starting up a new business and any help getting people to the new site would be great. Is this something a lot of folks do? I heard of people using Lightroom for this process and I tried it myself but when I later opened the files in ACDSee and looked at the file data, no keywords could be found. How can I check to make sure the keywords took? All the keywording info can be found in Lightroom itself, but I'm wondering if keywording something in Lightroom is only good when using Lightroom. :dunno

When you publish to SmugMug from Lightroom, the keywords come over as well.
