It's nice to be here again. I haven't posted much lately; everything started to look the same for awhile and I wasn't getting inspired. But when I recently took a trip to the west coast I made a point to focus on photography . I had tons of fun, which is my favorite thing to do with a camera, and came away with some shots that didn't totally suck either. I think I'm going to post a bunch of them over in the 'Journeys' section soon.
Here's a little bit of backstory. I didn't plan any of this trip around places or times to shoot, except for scouting one sunset location. I just took my gear with me everywhere. Since I shot a lot into the bright sky I started looking for silhouette opportunities as a way to liven them up and I didn't care at all if the dark areas lost definition. My plan was to try to get the shadows correct in the camera then bring back any highlights I needed to in post. I also played with setting my ISO intentionally warm so it would act like a warming filter. I love warm light on the beach. And these were only a couple shades to the warm side, not eight or ten. I think.
This is one of my favorite shots from the trip. The day was gray and rainy from dawn to dusk except for one glorious hour in the middle of the afternoon when the clouds made a hole for the sun and everything turned silver and copper. This scene was so perfectly suited to a silhouette that it nearly resembled this in real life. I did very little tweaking.
Thanks for looking.
