First attempt at sports photography and am quite happy. I'm very novice so would really appreciate any advice for improvement.

You got the first rule right---Fill the frame. I like the first shot with horse/rider coming into frame from right. Maybe a bit much empty on left, but a bit off center is good.

Good stuff. Good panning, takes lots of practice. Might work on exposure to lighten the riders face when in shadow. I assume a flash with horses is not wanted. Not sure the third one is a keeper or a seller, even in sports you want the facial expressions in all but a rare few cases.

    Good work in my opinion.

Nice work for first time. Pick your spots better, get the horse and riders face out of the shadow. Get in front of the horse. If you are going to shoot late in the jump go for 1 foot on the ground. You still have a lot of dead space in these. Where's the water jump? - everybody wants pics from the water jump. The panning shot is a great technique, might look good in a panoramic aspect ratio. Did you have fun? These are great events.

It was packed at the event so was a bit of a struggle to get optimal locations to shoot from. I ended up using a 35mm 1.8 Prime as its by far the fastest lens i had. As you can imagine this made location choice even harder as i needed to be so close.

I Couldn't get close enough for a decent water shot, the crowds were crazy.

Thank you both for your advice, its really appreciated. I will try to work on my exposure and also location for optimal use of sunlight.

I know it is quite ticky, but on the fourth shot, I'd clone in a leaf where the white spot is at his (the rider) mouth. My eye went right to that spot and for the life of me, I can't get it to go anywhere else. Weird, but true.

Other than that, I am having similar difficulties in doing all the suggested techniques offered by everyone but agree it is all about practice, practice, practice...it's going to be a long Autumn. :D

I hadn't noticed the spot of sky coming through. Now you have picked it out its all i can see (looks like a golf ball in her mouth (Mary King)) ha ha. I haven't done any photoshop on these as i am about as amateur at that as i am at photography. Both skill sets are slowly improving though. I will have a play
